Beach. Everyone has been working so hard lately so why not take a break and enjoy the beach? You can make sand castles, play in the water, and there are even umbrellas for those who'd rather just relax in the shade. There's a nice row of water melons ready to be smashed later in the day and when the sun goes down, that's when the sparklers come out.
Suffering. It's the hottest time of the year and the citadel doesn't have central air conditioning. The few air conditions that were installed have given up on life after being used so much and now, we really have to make do with what we can while the Konnosuke try to fix it. There's a limited number of fans, plenty of ice cream to go around, and the citadel should be built to circulate air, right? ... Right?!
Spooks. In Japan, summer is a time for horror. Gather around the camp fire and hear some spooky ghost stories or maybe head out into the woods just outside the citadel for a good ol' fashioned test of courage. It's all good, harmless fun! Of course, with so many spirits gathered in one place, what's to say a stray or curious outsider spirit won't join the mix...
Rain. Summer is also known for sudden and torrential downpours of rain. The clouds always seem to grown and darken suddenly and the next thing you know, it's raining sheets and the ground is shaking from thunder. Once it starts, it never seems to stop. Maybe you were caught out in the rain or maybe this is day 7 stuck inside.
Other! It's summer and there are tons of things to do. Go to the general store and stock up on ice cream, wake up in the middle of the night uncomfortable with heat, or run around screaming because cicadas are dying and flying at your face.
Although the sword is younger than him, Tonbokiri knows when he is being told sense. It does not take long to do the second tie, as the hair is already gathered. So he quietly winces through the reprimands, finishing off the hair tie before bowing towards Izumonokami.
"When you put it like that... My apologies, Izuminokami Kanesada-dono."
“You needn’t apologize, Tonbokiri. I just didn’t want you feeling any sort of guilt for ‘taking up my time’ when I’ve been enjoying this time with you.”
He let out a softer huff this time, tucking some shorter strands behind his ear. Tonbokiri was kind and easy to talk to, a man worthy of respect... he didn’t want the other sword to feel like his presence had somehow bothered him just because he offered up his own services.
"Thank you for saying so. I have been enjoying this time, as well. Very much." Still, he doesn't want Izuminokami to leave feeling offended for him passing on his generous offer... (If the sword presses again... he might just have to relent?)
Reaching around Izuminokami, he adjusts the mirror. "I have finished. I do hope it meets your satisfaction, at least a little."
If anything, he doesn't look much like his usual self, dressed in the dark navy yukata and having his hair so tightly gathered back. But hopefully it's cooler, which was the point.
His eyes light up the moment he sees his reflection in the mirror. Turning his head from one side to the other, admiring the work Tonbokiri did. He really did just seem like the happiest sword right now.
He paused in his own preening in the mirror to fully understand what Tonbokiri was saying. He didn't seem to mind his company and was willing to do this more often if he wanted to?
He blinks at Izuminokami in surprise, then glances to the side, abashed.
"Ah- Well, I may not be able to borrow your clothes, as I am somewhat larger than other swords... And as for my hair... Well..." Truly, if he gets this flustered even thinking about it... But surely he could trust Izuminokami with such a thing?
(Tonbokiri totally missed that he'd meant 'friendship'.)
He tilts his head back again, really feeling the weight wabble with his movements as he looks back at Tonbokiri. Honestly it was a little fascinating for him. He'd never seen the other sword look so flustered before.
"I'm going to start thinking you want me to do your hair if this is the reactions you're giving me."
"D- Did I sound like that?" You suck at being evasive, Tonbo.
With a sigh of self-reflection, he concedes, "I probably did, didn't I. Because I do very much enjoy having my hair combed. But... It is not something I can easily ask from a Touken Danshi."
He was surprised to see Tonbokiri cave in to his teasing. Usually he was on the receiving end of most of the teasing. Even Tonbokiri on very few occasions. He doesn't think Mutsunokami is that great okay!!! So being able to see this side in another was actually kind of fun.
Chuckling softly, Izuminokami starts to turn around in his spot so he could face Tonbokiri now.
"Since you've been so generous toward me this whole time, I'll return the favor. Comb please."
(That wasn't teasing. He'd been quite serious! ...But it was amusing how obvious their feelings had been.)
Surely Izuminokami would be offended if he rejected the offer now. Tonbokiri, at last, realizes how deep he's gotten himself and relents. Sliding himself slowly over the tatami mat, he comes to keel in front of the mirror and with both hands passes Izuminokami the comb.
"I put myself in your care."
The warmth in his face is not going to fade any time soon, but he still takes a deep breath to calm himself.
"I am very confident in my skills. You might even doze off you're enjoying it so much."
He really was feeling pretty confident too as he reached out to grab the mirror and comb from him and giving him that dumb grin of his before he gets up and moves around. He gently unties what Tonbokiri already had in his hair and let his fingers work through it to fan it all out.
--! How did he know, he might doze off? A-at least, if Izuminokami is half-way expecting it without him having said anything, perhaps it won't seem so strange if he does...
The feeling of fingers in his hair is a nostalgic pleasure, and he breathes out slowly.
"Thank you. I am somewhat proud of it..." The sideburns are a bit much, but other than that, he is entirely satisfied with the appearance Aruji gave him. ...However that process works.
"It is a bit thick though, so it takes a long time to dry after washing it. You must also have that trouble, Izuminokami-dono?" Never mind if it's thick or thin, there's just a lot of it.
"Yes, it is a problem I also suffer from. No matter how much you may towel dry it or just allow it to dry naturally, it always seems to take hours."
He never would have expected Tonbokiri to have to deal with that too, but as he combed his fingers through his hair a little to get his hair more loose, it could tell it was rather thick just like he said. It made sense..
Finally it's time for the comb, gently he takes Tonbokiri's hair into his hand and starts to comb through his hair slowly and gently. Putting in as much care as he would his own hair.
"I've heard that Aruji had a device that dries hair faster, but I never thought to look into it."
[You use "Comb" on Tonbokiri. It's super effective!]
Tonbokiri's broad shoulders relax visibly as Izuminokami starts combing through his hair. Of course- of course Izuminokami knows how to do it well, he has so much hair himself...
It's already becoming an effort to focus on the conversation. Embarrassing. But he should make an effort to keep it going, because falling asleep would be even more embarrassing.
"Is that so? That sounds useful. Perhaps Mutsunokami-dono would know..."
Izuminokami clicks his tongue at the mere suggestion that Mutsunokami would know. Despite the fact that that might be true, since the other sword did seem to know a lot about foreign modern things...
"Have you seen his hair? He probably just shakes the dampness free and lets his hair stay like that." Hmph!
He continued with his gentle combing, working up higher and higher and then back down once he finishes with one section of his hair. Luckily for him Tonbokiri was starting to feel drowsy, because it meant he probably didn't notice of flustered sound in his huffing.
Tonbokiri noticed, but only enough to think that it was cute that Izuminokami was still putting on airs after all this time. Well, it's no problem. That those two get along better than they show is good enough for him.
He does chuckle in agreement at the comment about Mutsunokami's hair. He has surprisingly dog-like personality and habits, doesn't he.
"You are right. I'd hate to trouble Aruji about it directly, but if the opportunity presents itself... it would be nice to know about this hair drying device."
His posture is slumping further down - a strange sight on the usually ruler-straight spear. It feels so good... so good... (All he needs now is a lap to lie upon.)
It took him a moment to realize that he was starting to slump in his sitting position and in a way it was kind of flattering... and cute? He's not sure he's ever seen Tonbokiri look this relaxed before. Even when he was pretty injured a while back ago, he still seemed as solid as he always did.
Part of him was almost wants to scratch his nails through his hair just to see how Tonbokiri might act, but he didn't want to surprise him too much either so for now it's just a thought in the back of his head.
"I'm sure a device like that would be rather popular among a lot of us," he said with amusement in his tone.
This time his laugh is brighter in reply, although he remains clearly relaxed in the thrall of having his hair combed.
"Haha, that is very true. It would probably be easier to count the number of those who don't have... at least moderately long hair." He chuckles lowly. "Perhaps even the potential of having to buy many of those devices has prevented their purchase."
"And can you imagine all the little fights that might break out with people hogging such device? I would foresee a more hectic citadel for a while if one of those devices came into our possession."
He chuckled a bit himself. He could just imagine Hasebe's reaction with everyone running around chasing each other, trying to be the one who got to use this device next. It would almost be worth having around just to see what happened. But with his luck he'd end up being pulled into the chaos and then being thrown out into farming duty. Bleh.
"I know I've already said this but... your hair really is nice," he murmured softly, finding the temptation to work his fingers through even stronger.
Izuminokami has a point about it becoming more hectic because of the device, but it's a little amusing to imagine, too.
His mind wanders for a moment about that, so it takes him a moment to catch up to what Izuminokami is saying.
"Thank you. I am... somewhat proud of it... ... I've said that already, too." He shakes his head slightly, despite Izuminokami still working on his hair. "My apologies."
"Look what you did, now I'm going to have to start all over," he tries to say it with a more serious tone, but it was obvious there was a smile on his face instead.
He lets go of Tonbokiri's hair once more, and using this as an excuse to do what he wanted to earlier, he moves his fingers through Tonbokiri's hair again, letting his nails lightly scratch against his scalp as he tries to fluff out his hair again.
Ah, he didn't trouble Izuminokami that much did he--
The sensation of Izuminokami running his nails lightly against his scalp causes him to give a high, sharp yelp. He straightens abruptly as he shouts, then just as quickly folds in half, his head to his knees and his hands over his face.
He groans unintelligibly into his knees, "This is why I can't ask Touken Danshi to do my hair..." But although Izuminokami probably (hopefully) didn't catch that, Tonbokiri's neck is about as red as his hair, which should give a good hint to how he feels about this.
Izuminokami quickly jumped in his spot on the floor when he heard Tonbokiri yelp like that. He pulled his hands away and stared down at his nails in a panic. Did he do something wrong? Maybe Tonbokiri had a sore spot?? Did he hit his head earlier and Izumi accidentally brushed it?! He didn't think his nails were too long so it couldn't be that..
"Tonbokiri I'm sorry I didn't--" he cut himself off when a certain color caught his eyes.
Wait a second... Unfortunately for Tonbokiri his personal space was being invaded, because Izuminokami moved in closely and leaned over his right side, as much as he could to try and get a glimpse of his face.
