6 ❀ Summer Citadel

  1. Beach. Everyone has been working so hard lately so why not take a break and enjoy the beach? You can make sand castles, play in the water, and there are even umbrellas for those who'd rather just relax in the shade. There's a nice row of water melons ready to be smashed later in the day and when the sun goes down, that's when the sparklers come out.
  2. Suffering. It's the hottest time of the year and the citadel doesn't have central air conditioning. The few air conditions that were installed have given up on life after being used so much and now, we really have to make do with what we can while the Konnosuke try to fix it. There's a limited number of fans, plenty of ice cream to go around, and the citadel should be built to circulate air, right? ... Right?!
  3. Spooks. In Japan, summer is a time for horror. Gather around the camp fire and hear some spooky ghost stories or maybe head out into the woods just outside the citadel for a good ol' fashioned test of courage. It's all good, harmless fun! Of course, with so many spirits gathered in one place, what's to say a stray or curious outsider spirit won't join the mix...
  4. Rain. Summer is also known for sudden and torrential downpours of rain. The clouds always seem to grown and darken suddenly and the next thing you know, it's raining sheets and the ground is shaking from thunder. Once it starts, it never seems to stop. Maybe you were caught out in the rain or maybe this is day 7 stuck inside.
  5. Other! It's summer and there are tons of things to do. Go to the general store and stock up on ice cream, wake up in the middle of the night uncomfortable with heat, or run around screaming because cicadas are dying and flying at your face.

"Gahaha!"

He's laughing because really, they should have expected Tonbokiri to think so practically and earnestly abou all of this. It's very on brand for Tonbokiri.

"Right, right, these watermelons cost us a fortune to get," He is, after all, a merchant sword so of course he would also be thinking of the financial reasons behind this, "Ya sure ya wanna use your spear, though?"

Some swords might think they're too good to cut produce.

He grins in return. Likewise, it is very like Mutsunokami to think about how expensive the watermelons are, so he can appreciate in that way why it'd be a shame to beat them to a pulp.

The question does give Tonbokiri pause, and he looks up at the spearhead.

"It is true, I am not meant to cut such things. But I do not mind. It is more peaceful than cutting enemies."

"Using a sword like a kitchen knife... surely that's proof of how peaceful times are!" At least, that's how he's going to look at it. He gives Tonbokiri a good pat on the back and laughs, "Or maybe how strange times are, gaha!"

Either way, he'll go towards the row of watermelons and try to find a good one for Tonbokiri to cut. It would be a shame to give Tonbokiri a small one... so here's the biggest one he could find, "How about this one?"

He chuckles in reply. These are certainly both strange and peaceful times.

When Mutsunokami presents the large watermelon, he can't help but laugh aloud.

"How generous, to give me such a large target! Or perhaps, more than that, we'll be able to eat all this between the two of us?"

"Shouldn't be a problem for a big guy like you, right?"

He sets it down in the sand and makes sure to get it in just the right position. It wouldn't be fair to put it at a bad angle or in such a way it would move in the sand. Once he's ready, he gives it a pat and steps back. "Remember! Ya gotta close your eyes and spin around 10 times!"
youwillbeunequaled: (| doesn't sound like a great idea...)

Well, yeah, but... That's still a lot of watermelon, you know.

He watches Mutsunokami's preparations carefully, so that he can gauge the distance properly and- hold on?

"Spin around ten times? I'd not heard about that. Is doing that really part of this?"

"It'd be too easy if ya saw it then closed your eyes, right?"

Come one, Tonbokiri. He doesn't make the rules! ... He doesn't really follow them either but this one is fun!
youwillbeunequaled: (! new daifuku...)

[personal profile] youwillbeunequaled 2019-09-16 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
... Yes, it would be easy, but he thought that was fine.
Tonbokiri shrugs and grins.

"Very well. However I shall be trusting you to guide me to the watermelon, Mutsunokami-dono. Blinded and disorientated, I would not want to cut something else by accident."

And Tonbokiri, being the trustworthy spear he is, closes his eyes tightly, resolved not to even peek until he makes the strike. Planting the end of his spear in the sand, he starts turning around it.
...
Wow, these human bodies are weak against the weirdest things. By the time he's done ten rounds, he struggles to even walk in a straight line, staggering against his spear for support.
