[As she scrutinizes him, he looks back with a pleasant smile on his face.
And she asks him a question that was... not what he expected, and he blinks a little in surprise.]
Oya.
[This might be the first time he has ever been asked that. Then again, the other saniwa that came through this place were all older and more learned that this little girl - Hana, he name is Hana, very fitting, he thinks. So he takes him just a second to gather himself.]
I was made in the year 989 of your calendar, Aruji. As I understand it, that was a very long time ago. More than a thousand years. So, that is how old I am.
( Her eyes go wide. The year doesn't even have four numbers and she can't do the math fast enough to figure out how old he would be exactly. But it's surprisingly old and it's hard to believe that it's true when... Mikazuki doesn't look that old.
She lingers for a moment, not really sure of what to do now. Sure, she's been given some tasks she needs to do but... she isn't used to giving orders. She needs to know about the swords who are here and appoint a secretary. Well, at least for the second task, Mikazuki seems like he'll be good enough for now. Ideally, a letter will arrive once she's settled in and it will tell Mikazuki how to manage her studies and there will be more direction but for now...
She steps closer, holding out both of her hands to him as if to help him stand up.
He is, after all, an old man. )
Will I get to talk to everyone?
( Sure, she'd introduced herself but that was more.. her talking at them instead of with them. She wants to get to know them. She's been told that's important. )
[He blinks again as she offers her hands to him. It's almost a little comical, such a small girl helping him get up, but he is going to milk it for that it's worth... and laugh inside at Hasebe's face while he does it.]
Of course, Aruji. Everyone here has been expecting you, after all.
Why don't we go to the kitchen? Shokudaikiri must have the snacks ready. And then we can give you a little tour of the Citadel.
( Of course, she isn't really doing any lifting at all to help him get up but that doesn't stop her from trying. Maybe it's because she's too young to really be dishonest or maybe she really is a genuine person. It's something the others will have to learn and foster on their own now that they'll be in charge of caring for her.
She only lets go of one hand once he's up, holding the other so she can follow him to the kitchen.
First Mikazuki and then Shokudaikiri. The names are getting more difficult. )
[He keeps her little hand in his as he leads the way to the kitchen.]
Ah, it's a bit hard to pronounce, isn't it? You can just call him 'Mitsu', Aruji. He won't mind.
[When they make it to the kitchen, Shokudaikiri is, indeed, finishing up the snack and he goes down on one knee to make himself less tall and introduce himself to their little master more intimately than earlier - he's a Date katana, he's in charge of cooking most meals, if there's anything she really like,s just tell him and he and Kasen will make it.
Mikazuki helps her settle down at the kitchen table, and she gets served some juice and a few of the cakes Shokudaikiri was making.]
I think today, you should go to bed early, Aruji. The trip was probably very tiring for you. Tomorrow, we can start on your studies and duties and sowing you around.
( There's just the smallest squeeze when he suggests she might have said it wrong. It's embarrassing being wrong and she makes a note to herself to practice harder. She'll make sure she gets it right next time.
The kitchen smells wonderful and her eyes grow wide as she tries to find the source. She's only distracted by Shokudaikiri's introduction and she listens carefully, trying to remember as much as she can... but at the end of this day, she'll only really remember he's the one in charge of meals with someone else she's yet to meet. She nods at the appropriate places and introduces herself again, telling him it's nice to meet him. She'll even tell him what she likes-- she likes sweets, especially ones with fruit because she likes those, too.
Looking over her collection of cakes though, she doesn't know where to begin! It's all too much for her to eat by herself though and after trying a few bites, she sticks her fork into one cake (catching a little bit of cherry on the end) and holds it out to Mikazuki to try just as he's beginning to explain what he thinks she should do, )
Oh... ( She frowns. ) I'm not tired.
( Except she is. But that doesn't mean she's quite ready to sleep... )
[Oh, he's getting a bite! he will accept gratefully.]
Thank you, Aruji.
[He's not even going to talk back about the 'I'm not tired'. He and Shokudaikiri exchange a glance, and they don't need to say anything. Once she has eaten enough - probably too much sugar, but who cares? - Mikazuki offers his hand again.]
Let's get you to the baths, Aruji.
[He escorts her there and then dresses down a little to actually help her bathe properly, helps her into a fresh yukata that was in her clothing chest, and then leads her back to her room where someone else has already laid out the futon.]
It's time to rest for now. There are quiet a few people for you to meet tomorrow.
[There aren't that many of them left, but still a good dozen or so. They will introduce themselves one on one tomorrow.]
( It's entirely too much sugar. More sugar than she's ever really had at once and she doesn't hate it.
Even if she hasn't been here for very long, something is gradually becoming more evident. She's taken to Mikazuki like a duckling and she's always more than willing to follow along after him, quick to hold onto his hand as he leads her from point A to point B, even if it means being tucked into bed.
She doesn't quite lay down though, instead, sitting up in her futon and looking down at her hands, )
... Mikazuki-san? ( There's a lilt to her voice, like she's about to ask one of those curious questions younger children are prone to asking. ) Are you really a sword?
( She hold out her fingers in front of her and looks up at him. He certainly hadn't felt like one. )
[All the others swords have noticed as much, and some of them are pretty glad for it, too, because they're not quite sure what to do with a small human. The tantou seem happy to have a little master, but some of the others are pretty perplex. How do you raise a small human exactly? They are swords, not babysitters.
But Mikazuki doesn't seem flustered about it, so they've wisely decided they can leave it to him.
He smiles at the question, and holds out his hand for her to touch. It's big and warm.]
Yes, I am. But I am also more than that, thanks to Aruji. To the one before you, and now to you as well.
[They may have been summoned by another Saniwa, but it is her power now that will sustain them, heal them, make them stronger.]
It is thanks to you that we have these bodies and can now experience things humans feel. In time you will understand. but it is time for sleep now, Aruji. I'll stay with you until you fall asleep.
( She looks at his hand and reaches out to touch it gently. Her hands are small, and soft, the hands of someone who really hasn't had to work with them very much. It's only now, when she really focuses on their hands touching that just a little bit of her magic seems to actively seep through. It's warm, the kind of life granting magic all saniwa possess but from this day on, it's the magic of his new saniwa.
Mikazuki's answer isn't a new one. She'd hear very similar things before coming here. She doesn't understand all of it but she understands just enough to know the important things: They depend on her and she'll have to take care of them. And soon, she'll learn that she can depend on them and they'll take care of her...
When her concentration breaks, so does that short connection of magic and she nods, getting under the covers and turning on her side to watch Mikazuki just a little more with curious eyes.
An old sword that is now an old man... Hm. )
Good night, Mikazuki-san.
( And Mikazuki is absolutely right. She goes to sleep almost immediately. )
