❝ANOTHER BAD END MEME❞

A popular fan theory is that the enemy swords you fight are actually your swords from an alternate universe who wished to change history. For this meme, feel free to make up your own starters or use one of the prompts below. Remember to state if your character is corrupted, not, or if you have no preference.

1. How could you let this happen? They wanted to be left alone, their mood was poor, and maybe you should have noticed the signs but now that you have, it’s too late. They can’t stop these thoughts in their head and something in their soul has turned dark and ugly. Is it too late? Maybe you can get through to them… if not, are you ready to draw your sword?

2. Possession. Even the smallest trace of doubt can attract them— evil spirits. Once the dark spirit has latched on to your soul, it takes over and consumes you. Maybe the possession is gradual or maybe it happens suddenly. All you know is that everyone has regrets and anyone can doubt… this could happen to anyone.

3. In a moment. You've been assigned on a mission. It's nothing surprising but this is one that hits a little closer to the heart and not in a good way. It's natural to wonder what you would do if you could go back in time and change a certain thing. But right now, it's actually in your power to make it happen. Can you do it? And if you do, can you deal with the consequences?

4. Becoming your own enemy. Your mission is to go back in time and let things happen as they were meant to be but their fall into despair was never supposed to happen, right? And so you went back in time to prevent their misfortunes but you keep failing again and again until, this time, you think you’ve got it. This time, you’ll be able to save your friend - but will you be able to save yourself too?

5. Reborn again. When destroyed in battle, the sword disappears only to return again anew. You can’t choose the fate you’re born with though and this time, someone has returned… on the wrong side.

6. The other side. But there are three sides to this war, aren't there? You are the third side: the Kebiishi. This army thinks they're preserving history but you know better, don't you? It's not their fault... the only history they know is the history they ruined. The saniwa's army doesn't know how to stop and that's why it's up to you to put an end to them.

7. Actually not so innocent. You don't even realize you're doing it. You go to sleep, you black out, and the next thing you know, there's blood on your sword. But from what? How? Did you do it? You don't... remember doing this but everyone is saying you did something wrong. But you're innocent! You swear!

8. The cure is ineffective. They saved you. You'd turned on them before and you were forced to commit grave sins against your will but they saved you. They stopped you. Your soul was purified by the saniwa sage. Did it hurt? Maybe you remember. Maybe you don't. But all that matters you thought you were saved... until it became clear that you weren't. You're living on borrowed time. You're a ticking time bomb. Are you ready for part two?

9. Wildcard. Bring the pain. Make your own/mix and match.

( He grumbles a little at the sudden compliment. He's a sword that loves praise and attention but sometimes.... when it's like this... it's just a little... You know? He does his best to play it off, )

( The Shinsengumi! They'll never agree on some things! They're just a bunch of stubborn punks that don't listen so who cares about them!!

He plays his next move easily. )

Are ya worried she won't fix you?

( He doesn't look at Chougi when he speaks again. His next question is something that he feels like Chougi should be able to react to openly, without worrying Mutsu is going to see and say something about it. )

D'ya think she's that kind of person? Or because you're that kind of sword?

( The type that should be scrapped? )

After this, I don't think she should. If it happened once, it could happen again. It's too much of a risk. And anyway, I'm not...I'm not established like you. I don't have the experience fighting in a human body and I'm pretty sure being placed here was as much to get me out of the way as anything else--

( He'll take it on his own terms! )

I'd tell ya to talk to her about it if you feel that strongly but I'm gonna go ahead and tell ya, it won't make a difference. So you haven't been here all that long. You're still the new guy.

But the moment ya joined us, you became one of us. Being established has nothing to do with it.

( That's how it works here. Everyone is a part of the team-- a part of this big family they've made up. )

And that means no matter what sort of situation you find yourself in or whatever troubles you're going through... you don't gotta go through it alone and no one's gonna leave ya high and dry.

You know headquarters hates that one "one of us" thing? You're not doing yourselves any favors by pretending to be a big happy family.

[ Except for the part where actually this citadel is successful, despite the odds. ]

Wouldn't be the first time someone's called me that, ya know. Or my master. ( Ryouma had also been regarded as a fool. A radical man that collaborated with traitors and terrorists. ) And it wouldn't be the first time they were wrong either.

( He says as he takes that piece Chougi just played. )

Ya know.... just 'cause someone's got power doesn't mean they're always right.

[ Damn. He saw that loss coming, but it's still annoying. ]

I'm pretty sure headquarters is right. Otherwise they wouldn't be headquarters.

[ Duh.

He puts down another piece -- less careless, this time. ]

It was him, you know. The fake. The...replica. [ Casting blame isn't going to make him feel any better about what happened, but he almost tries anyway. Almost, but stops himself before he can. ] It's just unfair, is all. He's like you -- every citadel out there has summoned a Yamanbagiri Kunihiro. Usually more than one. He's so beloved and it's always him people mean when they say "Yamanbagiri." Except for you, I guess.

[ He resists the urge to dump his stones on the ground. This is stupid. Go is stupid, everything is stupid, he's stupid. ]

That's your problem. You think the ones on top are there 'cause they're right but it doesn't really matter how they got there 'cause that's all in the past. What matters is they're still there because they're the ones with power right now.

"Except for me?" ( He lets out a laugh and slams down his next piece. It's the same as all of his other moves so far-- he makes them easily and naturally, almost like he isn't thinking at all, ) Gahaha! Don't go treating me like I'm special.

D'ya really think people look at you and think of someone else the whole time they're talking to ya?

And anyway it's true. Aruji calls me by name, you call me by name. Anyone else says "Yamanbagiri" and they follow it up with "Oh, sorry, not you." So-- so yeah, I do think that!

( Look, some day he'll go off on his rants about the #establishment and how it's important to strive for what's best for you, and speak up if you have to. But that isn't a conversation for now.

It's very possible the process has already begun (it has) but a lot of this really does have to do with Chougi right now. Mutsu hadn't really explained that. The process itself isn't too different from just getting ordinary repairs... you're just stuck in this room longer and have a lot more time to let your mind wander. It's easier to blame the repairs, though. He understands that.

He runs his fingers through his bowl, turning over the pieces as he listens to Chougi go on. He could answer those questions but those aren't really the important parts, are they? Instead, he goes back a bit, )

Why don't ya give 'em a reason to talk to you then?

He treated everyone the same.

Everyone forgets 'cause he's got such a legacy but ya know... We were pretty low for a bunch of samurai. ( they were the lowest rank, even, not even allowed to carry an umbrella or wear certain kinds of shoes because they weren't worthy. ) But he treated everyone the same whether they were a lord or a farmer. And 'cause of that, even though he was just a no good nobody from Tosa... he made friends where ever he went.

[ Chougi makes a-- what is that face? A derisive sneer? A look of horror? Vaguely confused and uncomfortable? It's kind of all of those things. It's weird. That's a weird face. ]

But they're not--

[ Okay, buddy, dial it back. Let's not shout at one of the few people you actually like here. ]

They're not the same, though. Some of them are just...they're just objectively worse, and a lot of them could be so much better but they won't even try. [ Hmmm, pot meet kettle much? ] Like Ishikirimaru, for example, he's So. Slow.

[ IT'S SO AGGRAVATING. ]

Sounds like a guy who's never been hit by Ishikirimaru.

(Don't slander a good sword. Pick on someone else who deserves it, like Izuminokami or Doudanuki.)

( It's what he does! No exceptions! But he's made his point and he knows when to start backing off. It's really amazing what he can do when he has a level head before he can say anything else though, footsteps approach and there's a knock at the door and it slides open. There is Midare looking worried and carrying a tray of onigiri and tea. )

"Mukkun! Aruji said you and Yamanbagiri were in repairs."

( And if their saniwa told Midare why, he doesn't show any sign of it. Kneeling down, Midare sets down the tray beside him and slides it over to the two uchigatana. Upon closer inspection, there are different types of onigiri. No two are really the same. Some of them are bigger and smaller, others more misshapen… )

Gaha! Did you and your brothers make these?

( Midare nods, )

"She said you might be here for awhile." ( And when he says "you," he looks at both of them. It's a general you, not just Mutsu. ) "So we made enough for you and Yamanbagiri.""

( Mutsu reaches out to ruffle the tantou's hair, )

Thanks, Midare-chan! What d'ya say, Yamanbagiri?

[ This is Chougi quickly looking away from Midare and at a random point on the wall instead. He just doesn't want anyone else to see how unsettled Mutsu's comments made him -- poor Midare is a victim of Chougi's pride. No wonder people sometimes find him difficult to talk to.

He does glance over at the onigiri though (one of them is so misshapen he can practically see the filling), and he's certainly not going to refuse food. Especially when he's hungry. But he stubbornly doesn't say anything until Mutsu addresses him directly. ]

...Thanks. They look good.

[ Actually, several of them look distinctly Not Very Good but look, Mutsu. He told you he was trying. ]

( At least the others are used to it by now. And contrary to what Chougi might think, there are people who like him and try to explain things to others so they won't judge him so harshly. Midare gives Chougi a small smile. Yes, he can see that he's trying. )

"You're welcome." ( And to both of them, ) "Are you going to be alright without Yagen?"

It's just a scratch, don't worry about it.

( And he takes a moment to chat with Midare. It's a short conversation-- asking what happened to the expedition he was supposed to go on today. Don't worry, Nakigitsune volunteered to go. Well, Mutsu promises Midare he'll make up for that later. Before Midare leaves, he looks at Chougi, )

"I made that one."

( He points to one shaped like a bear and runs off. At least the one he pointed to looks nice. )

That's probably a good one. You should try it.

( Says Mutsu with a mouth full of food. )

That wasn't so hard, was it?

[ ...Well, it wouldn't be right to ignore it after Midare pointed it out and everything...

Fine. He'll eat it. ]

It wasn't that bad, I guess. But Midare's...Midare.

[ Just because he didn't say much to Midare doesn't mean he hates him!

He bites the bear's head off.

...Yeah, it's good. Goodbye, bear, Chougi has devoured you. He's hungrier than he thought and reaches for-- You know what, he's going to take the misshapen one with bits of its filling falling out. Put it out of its misery. ]

So I guess you're stuck here with me overnight after all.

(Chougi's a lot nicer than he lets on and he's a lot nicer than he thinks, too. It isn't Mutsu's job to tell him that though. It's something he'll have to figure out and realize for himself.)

And what about it? (Of course Midare is Midare.) The only think I'm stuck with is you playing a lousy game, though.

(Honestly, given his injury, he could probably leave if he really wanted to and just avoid using his hand... but here he is.)

D'ya know how to play or do I need to go look for something easier instead?

[ Here he is...for some unknown reason.

Chougi scoffs. ]

The only reason you think it's a lousy game is because you know you'll lose.

[ He's not actually great at go, it's bluster, but his next move is a good one. ]

Hah! I'm no loser!

( He knows exactly what move he's going to make next. He has an idea of what his next few moves will be depending on how Chougi moves. He's a forward thinking spirit, one who always thinks about the future so it's really no surprise that he knows what he wants to do.

It's good that Chougi seems to be cheering up, though. It sure would have been miserable if he sulked the entire time. )

I'm already ahead of ya and you got a long way to go Ya ma n ba gi ri~
