❝ANOTHER BAD END MEME❞

A popular fan theory is that the enemy swords you fight are actually your swords from an alternate universe who wished to change history. For this meme, feel free to make up your own starters or use one of the prompts below. Remember to state if your character is corrupted, not, or if you have no preference.

1. How could you let this happen? They wanted to be left alone, their mood was poor, and maybe you should have noticed the signs but now that you have, it’s too late. They can’t stop these thoughts in their head and something in their soul has turned dark and ugly. Is it too late? Maybe you can get through to them… if not, are you ready to draw your sword?

2. Possession. Even the smallest trace of doubt can attract them— evil spirits. Once the dark spirit has latched on to your soul, it takes over and consumes you. Maybe the possession is gradual or maybe it happens suddenly. All you know is that everyone has regrets and anyone can doubt… this could happen to anyone.

3. In a moment. You've been assigned on a mission. It's nothing surprising but this is one that hits a little closer to the heart and not in a good way. It's natural to wonder what you would do if you could go back in time and change a certain thing. But right now, it's actually in your power to make it happen. Can you do it? And if you do, can you deal with the consequences?

4. Becoming your own enemy. Your mission is to go back in time and let things happen as they were meant to be but their fall into despair was never supposed to happen, right? And so you went back in time to prevent their misfortunes but you keep failing again and again until, this time, you think you’ve got it. This time, you’ll be able to save your friend - but will you be able to save yourself too?

5. Reborn again. When destroyed in battle, the sword disappears only to return again anew. You can’t choose the fate you’re born with though and this time, someone has returned… on the wrong side.

6. The other side. But there are three sides to this war, aren't there? You are the third side: the Kebiishi. This army thinks they're preserving history but you know better, don't you? It's not their fault... the only history they know is the history they ruined. The saniwa's army doesn't know how to stop and that's why it's up to you to put an end to them.

7. Actually not so innocent. You don't even realize you're doing it. You go to sleep, you black out, and the next thing you know, there's blood on your sword. But from what? How? Did you do it? You don't... remember doing this but everyone is saying you did something wrong. But you're innocent! You swear!

8. The cure is ineffective. They saved you. You'd turned on them before and you were forced to commit grave sins against your will but they saved you. They stopped you. Your soul was purified by the saniwa sage. Did it hurt? Maybe you remember. Maybe you don't. But all that matters you thought you were saved... until it became clear that you weren't. You're living on borrowed time. You're a ticking time bomb. Are you ready for part two?

9. Wildcard. Bring the pain. Make your own/mix and match.

[Tapping his chin with his finger, then...]

Ah! But that's Kinpatsu-kun's name, isn't it? Is it yours too? That's confusing.

[Another pointed look at the blade.]

What exactly do you think you're doing here?

A fake! He's a fake!

[ Anija, you broke it. ]

It stole my name from me, it shouldn't even exist!

[ He's going to make sure it doesn't exist -- and if it gets reforged he'll break it again and and again and again until they finally learn and if they don't he'll break them, too-- ]

I'm Yamanbagiri. That one's just a fake. [ He lifts the blade and points it at Higekiri. ] You don't need to remember a fake.

.... But he was here first.

[Why is this guy getting so agitated, really? Why is getting to angry? A name really isn't something to get that angry over.

Higekiri shrugs and then turns his back on Chougi.]

It doesn't really matter anyway.

[ Some swords do get so caught up in their names. Especially ones like Chougi who are afraid of being forgotten or overshadowed by the ones who've come after them.

In Chougi's case that fear translates to anger and that anger's been whipped into a frenzy by whatever's gotten literally inside of him -- the whole Higekiri forgetting his name...didn't...help... but that's not really Higekiri's fault.

Turning his back on Chougi, though--

Of course Chougi takes advantage of it, lunging forward with a shout.

This isn't going to end well for one of them. ]

[Is it really taking advantage when this is a rushed attack, not even stealthy, and easily side-stepped? Which of course Higekiri does side-step. A little whirl, and a flash, and the tachi's own blade is out of the sheath.]

Now, now, you really are going to get hurt, you know? Don't blame me for it afterwards.

[ It's stupid that he actually feels better about things like this. Cutting down an opponent from the back isn't Chougi's style -- granted, what about this is his style?

The little voice speaks up again. He's looking down on you. He remembers the fake's name, but not yours? That's wrong. That's all wrong!

If he was himself, Chougi would have backed off a long time ago, but he hasn't been "himself" since before he even saw Higekiri. So he whirls and strikes again, nevermind that he's hopelessly outclassed.]

[Were this another sword, maybe they'd call for help, or alert someone that something is wrong with this guy. Not Higekiri, though. He's being attacked, so first priority is disabling the attacker. Maybe not go for the kill, this is a comrade even if he can't remember his name. But at least make sure he is taken down and he stays down.

He ducks under the slash and aims at Chougi's knees. That's more Hizamaru's move, but going for the legs is the best way to make someone less mobile and less likely to be able to move around.]

[ In short: Chougi's screwed.

He goes down hard, trousers already soaked with blood, nearly landing on his own damn sword in the process. But he hasn't given up yet. He's in agony -- the deep slice across his legs feels like it's on fire -- but something other than him pushes him forward despite the damage.

Twice he tries to get up and fails. On the third try, he at least manages to get into a position where he can face Higekiri. Have at least a chance to keep fighting. ]

[Oh no, that won't do. A good sword should learn to stay down when they are beaten.

But then, is this guy a good sword? Hmmmmmm....]

I told you'd get hurt. You should listen when people talk, Ya-man-ba-gi-ri.

Well, if you won't stay down... that arm, I'll take it!

[There's a flash as the tachi slashes upwards, cleaving cleanly through the arm that's holding the blade.]

[ He tries to be a good sword....

There's not even time to be angry that, look, Higekiri does know his name because he's too quickly...well. Disarmed.

It takes a second for it to sink in, blood flowing from what's left of his arm along with something black and smoky that dissipates as it touches the air. It's not just Chougi who lost this fight.

It's only Chougi screaming, though. ]

[Higekiri watches the scene dispassionately, seeing the blackish smoke dissipate in the air. So that was what was causing this? Hmmm... Well, it's gone now and there are more pressing matters to attend to.]

Hey, we need help here! Ettoooo.... that guy got hurt!

[Maybe not the most informative, but it does rouse some people who had been on their way anyway because of the sounds of the fight. There's a lot of shouting, in the middle of which Higekiri manages to explain he didn't just slaughter a comrade for the hell of it, the guy attacked him first and someone should probably take him to repairs, and oh, don't forget his arm, here you go.

They quickly have some sort of makeshift sling to carry Chougi to repairs, and Higekiri just follows after them, curious. Is he really back to his senses?]

[ That's such a mild way of putting it. "That guy got hurt."

For what it's worth, Chougi doesn't try to murder anyone taking him for repairs, though it'd be pretty hard when he's lost a lot of blood and is also missing an arm. An arm that's lying in his lap while he's carted off and that he just kind of stares at blankly once he's quit screaming his head off.

Yes, he's back to his senses. And once his arm is at least semi-reattached (and not in immediate danger of falling back off again, though it'll be hours yet before he can use his hand), he attempts to show that. ]

Higekiri. I...

[ Sorry I tried to kill you and made you wipe the floor with me. ]

[Dring the time of the repairs, Higekiri was made to go report to the Saniwa and explain what happened, which he did very honestly. That guy came at him yelling and suddenly lunged at him with his sword drawn, so he stopped him and saw some weird black smokey thing that smelled like a demon come out of him. He answered questions as precisely as he could, although he did not go as far as saying he's sorry for the commotion.

So when he is approached by the cause of said commotions some hours later, he's very much put the matter behind him in his mind, and looks politely puzzled to be called out.]

Hmmmm? What is it?

[ Okay, doing this really hurts his pride and you wouldn't think that would be worse than losing his arm and almost losing both his legs but actually it is but that's not the point here.

Chougi bows sharply at the waist. He remembers everything and the shame and humiliation hurt worst of all. ]

I-- I apologize. What I did was inexcusable.

..... Heh?

[Higekiri looks... a little lost.]

What did you do?

[ Is...is this Higekiri fucking with him or did he actually forget?? Chougi can't tell and it's stressing him out!!

He straightens up way too fast and has to grab his arm. Careful Chougi. ]

I...tried to...

[ YOU KNOW WHAT MAYBE IT'S BETTER THIS WAY. ]

Nothing. Nevermind.

You tried to...?

[But the rest of the sentence doesn't come, and so Higekiri just shrugs...]

Oh. Okay.

How is your arm?

[ ...Does Higekiri at least remember lopping his arm off? ]

It's fine. It's...I'm not supposed to use it for a day or so, but it'll be fine. Doesn't even hurt.

[ Well it kinda hurts. But that's not important. ]

I heard you already spoke to Aruji so...thanks.

[Does he? It's a mystery!]

Hm? Oh, that...

[Higekiri waves away whatever concern there might be.]

Did something happen?

[Does he mean what he did before, or what Chougi had going on before that?]

[ Boy he sure is convinced Higekiri dislikes him. Time to pretend everything is okay and he's totally competent. ]

No. Nothing...nothing really.

[ He's not owning up to NOTHIN'. ]

Anyway, I need to speak to Aruji myself so...

[ He's just gonna....go....]
