Hanahaki is a fictional disease in which the victim coughs up flower petals when they suffer from one-sided love. It ends when the beloved returns their feelings (romantic love only; strong friendship is not enough), or when the victim dies. It can be cured through surgical removal, but when the infection is removed, the victim's romantic feelings for their love also disappear.

[ Okay, it was...a slightly larger than usual reaction, even for Chougi. But look, he's fine now. He's not even coughing anymore. For the moment anyway. He just needs to get rid of Mutsu and then get rid of the flowers hidden in his hand and then everything really will be fine, see? ]

( Chill, Chougi. He holds up up his hands to try to get the other sword to relax. No point in getting him all worked up when he's trying to ask for help. Patting the top of the laundry pile, )

I was gonna ask if you could take some for me. Gotta hang 'em out to dry if we're gonna sleep tonight.

( Because it's mostly sheets and blankets. )

He's still waiting! But when it becomes obvious that there's nothing else to really say, he shrugs and picks up the basket again, )

[ Chougi waves and gets out of Mutsu's way. He needs to dispose of these flowers and he is absolutely not going to see Yagen about this cough (yet). He's still got hope that it'll eventually go away on its own. Maybe.

But here he is, a couple hours later, with a handkerchief full of more flowers that he's on his way to the kitchen to burn before anyone can see him. ]
